Facebook announced that, after the polls close in the U.S. presidential election on November 3rd, it will ban all "social issue, electoral or political ads" in the United States.  Facebook said it is taking the action in order to "reduce opportunities for confusion or abuse."  

Facebook said that the ban is only temporary, and that it will notify advertisers when the restriction is lifted.  Sarah Schiff, Facebook's product lead for political advertising said that, "The temporary ban is expected to last about one week, but that will be subject to change."  

As part of the announcement, Facebook said that it has been taking significant steps to help protect the integrity of the U.S. elections, including rejecting ad submissions before they could run about 2.2 million times for targeting the U.S. without completing the authorization process.
