President's Nominee for FTC Chairman Raises Concerns About Technology and Cyber Threats

In his pre-hearing questionnaire submitted to the Senate's Commerce Committee, the President's nominee for Chairman of the FTC, Joseph Simons, said that one of the top challenges that the FTC faces is that, "rapid changes in technology and cyber threats provide a significant challenge to the Agency's ability to fulfill its consumer protection mission and provide meaningful guidance to the business community."

Mr. Simons also said that, "it is critical, despite these challenges, that the FTC protect consumers without unduly burdening them or interfering with the ability of firms (especially small firms and new entrants) to use data to enhance competition."
