New Advertising Code Released in New Zealand

Today, the Advertising Standards Authority in New Zealand released a new Advertising Standards Code.  The new Code consolidates standards that were previously found in the Advertising Code of Ethics, the Code for Comparative Advertising, the Code for People in Advertising, the Code for Advertising Food, the Code for Environmental Claims, and the Code for Advertising Vehicles.

The new Code goes into effect on November 1, 2018, but the Code will not be applied to existing advertisements until February 1, 2019.

The purpose of the Code is to ensure that every advertisement is "responsible" --  in other words, that all advertising must be "legal, decent, honest, and truthful and respect the principles of fair competition, so that the public can have confidence in advertising."

Reviewing and updating the Codes is an important part of the ASA’s work and it is great to have the new Advertising Standards Code in place to support responsible advertising to consumers
